Maj. Matthew Clark

Band Director

Maj. Matthew Clark (Royal Canadian Air Force, retired) is a conductor, euphonium soloist, and retired senior officer of the Royal Canadian Air Force. With over 30 years of leadership in military and academic music, he is widely recognized for his contributions to wind band performance, education, and commissioning. Clark's awards include membership in the Order of Military Merit for conspicuous merit and exceptional service by active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and the Canadian Forces' Decoration. He maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout North America and Europe.

Clark served as Commanding Officer and Director of Music for both the Royal Canadian Air Force Band and the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy. He was later appointed Commandant of the Canadian Forces Music Training Centre, overseeing all national training and performance standards for military musicians. His international work includes leading Canadian ensembles on royal duties at Buckingham Palace and commemorative performances in Normandy, France.

He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Band Conducting from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto. His service has been recognized with numerous honors, including appointment to the Order of Military Merit, the Canadian Forces Decoration, and invitation to join the American Bandmasters Association and serve as a judge for the North American Brass Band Championships.

A passionate advocate for Canadian wind music, Clark has commissioned numerous new works and contributed extensively as a conductor, recording artist, and producer. His writing appears in The Canadian Wind Band Resource Book and GIA’s The North American Wind Symphony. He also serves on the IDEA Committee of the American Bandmasters Association.
