Jeffrey P. Hogan

Col. Jeffrey P. Hogan (United States Marine Corps, retired) is the deputy commandant for 4th Battalion.

Hogan graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and was commissioned a second lieutenant in May 1991.  After flight training, he was designated a naval aviator and assigned to HMM-268 in California where he made multiple shipboard deployments to the Western Pacific as a CH-46 helicopter pilot in support of Operations SOUTHERN WATCH and SAFE DEPARTURE.

 In July 1998, Hogan reported to HMT-204 in North Carolina and became one of the first pilots to complete flight training in the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, while simultaneously overseeing the operational test and acceptance of the service’s first full-flight simulator.  In August 2003, he reported to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 22 as the test director for aircraft survivability, and as a principal architect of the Marine Corps’ transition to the MV-22.

In 2006, Hogan reported to VMM-162 as the operations officer and deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  In 2009, he assumed command of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264, supervising the squadron’s transition to the MV-22 Osprey and deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During this deployment, VMM-264 flew over 2,700 combat sorties without a flight mishap or combat loss, culminating in a Chief of Naval Operations Aviation Safety Award in 2010

Following squadron command, Hogan reported to United States Central Command as the deputy chief of current operations where he coordinated contingency operations and deployments within the command’s area of responsibility and led multiple crisis action teams within the Joint Operations Center.  He then transferred to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing to assume command of Marine Aircraft Group 26. 

Hogan relinquished command in 2017 and reported to Headquarters Marine Corps as the director of program evaluation and analysis for the Deputy Commandant of Programs & Resources. Following his Pentagon tour, Hogan returned to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in 2019 for duty as the assistant wing commander and retired from the Marine Corps in 2021 after 30 years of service.

Hogan holds a Master of Military Studies from the Marine Corps University, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the College of Naval Warfare where he graduated with highest distinction. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

 After leaving active duty, Hogan joined Vetergy Group LLC as an organizational leadership and safety consultant to commercial and governmental clients in oil and gas exploration, manufacturing, maritime shipping, and rail transportation, where he provided leader development training, independent incident investigations, and investigative support with an emphasis on decision-making in complex systems. Hogan also served as an evaluator with Obsidian Solutions Group, evaluating the performance of Navy and Marine Corps aviation forces during multiple force-on-force exercises, and mentoring senior commanders and their staffs to improve adaptive capacity and decision making against a peer adversary.
