A Message from Your Regimental Commander

Congratulations and welcome to Virginia Tech and the Corps of Cadets. You have chosen to become a part of over 150 years of history as a member of the class of 2030, which is a title you’ll earn every day and learn to appreciate over time. You’ve taken the first step into a lifetime of leadership and service, but your dedication and development shouldn’t start when you first step on campus. Prepare yourself for long days moving on your feet and thinking critically, all while you’re being asked to solve problems and develop academically. Running and training, reading and writing, developing a skill or working on a passion project now are expectations before you arrive. As long as you work on being a good person first and a good student second, you’ll have every opportunity to thrive as a Cadet.

What you’re about to begin is going to challenge you. Between the rigor of your academics, the structure of the Corps of Cadets, and the requirements of your individual graduating program, your day will not be the same as a regular student’s. You’ll learn how to manage your time, prioritize, and advocate for yourself when you need help. The physical, mental, and spiritual fitness of you and your peers will be tested in a plethora of ways, and you will be expected to adapt and learn quickly. Recognize that each stressful moment, no matter how overwhelming, is an opportunity to prepare for a world where your peers will look for you to remain calm, confident, and professional when it matters most.

This isn’t about what you’re capable of now. It’s about providing you with the support to improve where you’re struggling and excel where you’re already strong. We will put as much effort as we can into your development, but only you can make the decision to keep trying and make changes. Build habits that will serve you throughout your college and professional careers and dedicate yourself to improving every day. You’re going to be offered opportunities that few others will ever have the chance to experience, it’s important you take advantage of as many as you can. Try something new, find what you’re passionate about, and take initiative to develop yourself around people that will push you.

It’s no exaggeration to say you’ve already committed to something life changing. Look to the future with optimism and excitement knowing you’re going to be surrounded by people who will fight to see you grow and succeed.

Welcome to Virginia Tech, welcome to the Corps, and welcome to the team.

Good Luck,

Robert W. Farris
