Family Guide

WELCOME TO THE CORPS FAMILY

First, let us say this plainly: congratulations, you have every reason to be proud! Your cadet made a courageous decision to pursue a path of purpose—one defined by service, character, and leadership. The decision to attend Virginia Tech likely involved the entire family, and we recognize the commitment you have made.

Joining the Corps of Cadets is no ordinary college experience. It’s a deliberate choice to take on greater responsibility and higher standards. Our cadets balance academic demands, ROTC training, and a rigorous, values-based leadership program. They will learn to lead, follow, and serve with humility, surrounded by a community that demands integrity, accountability, and a commitment to something larger than themselves.

We know this journey is not theirs alone. Many of us on the commandant’s staff are parents, too. We understand that when a young adult leaves home, the family does not stop investing. You are still very much involved. You still care, guide, and cheer them on— often from a distance.

This is where this Family Guide comes in. It is here to help answer some pressing questions, help you navigate this new world, and connect you with the right people when you need support. The Corps' leader development program is made up of three pillars: academics, leadership experiences, and physical fitness. Our Family Guide will dive into each of these pillars in depth.

We ask a great deal of our cadets—because our mission demands it. We are developing leaders of character, grounded in moral courage and integrity. This means your cadet will be held to higher standards than their peers across campus, and they will earn respect because of it. We ask you to learn what those standards are, and when the time comes, help remind your cadet why high expectations matter.

There will be challenging days, especially when personal growth is involved. But this path, while more demanding, leads to a future more than worthy of their potential. This is why your steady encouragement and long-view perspective are so important to their success.

We are fully committed to your cadet’s success—but we are not meant to walk this path alone. Together with you, we will guide them to become leaders of character, ready to lead and trusted to serve. Welcome to the Corps!
