Alumni Notes Fall 2024

A crowd mingles around hightop tables and a large tent behind Lane Hall on Upper Quad

From the Alumni Office

It has been my distinct honor to have served as your alumni director for the past several years.  The highlight has been getting the opportunity to meet so many of you either in person or virtually.

Since arriving, we have been assessing the strength of our alumni programs along three lines of effort: Building a connection with our alumni; building a relationship with our future alumni (current cadets); and increasing support of university programs and initiatives.  In every category we have increased performance steadily.  Bottom line: we are getting stronger every year.  And I am not at all worried about continuing to trend in a positive direction given the exceptional teammates that an alumni director has within the commandant’s staff, across the university, and teammates that are alums that volunteer on our VTCC Alumni Board.  Our success has been a result of our team comprised of faculty, staff, cadets, alums, and friends of the Corps… not a result tied directly to the person that fills the alumni director position.

Having said that, it has come time for me to pass the alumni director position off to the next person as I become Lt. Col. Don Russell’s successor as deputy commandant for 2nd Battalion.  The job listing has been published, and the university is looking for our next alumni director.

My advice to the next alumni director: Buckle up; you are in for a fun ride! You will get to meet thousands of passionate Hokies, interact with the outstanding young adults that comprise our Corps, design and execute tremendous events, and most importantly, get to witness first-hand the magic that happens when alums reconnect with the university and their classmates.

Thank you all for your past, current, and future support and I look forward to maintaining my connection with those that I have met and those that I will continue to meet in the future.  See you on Upper Quad!

Ut Prosim,

Did you get the email?

Of the approximately 11,000 living Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alums, we have missing or outdated contact information for a large percentage (over 4,000). With the decreased size of our alumni population based on the smaller size of our Corps during the 1970’s-90’s, it is imperative that we don’t leave “anyone on the bench.”  One of our primary, quickest, and cheapest ways of communicating is through email.  Please ensure we have your preferred email address so we can tell you about upcoming opportunities to remain engaged with the Corps and the university. To update your contact information, send an email to updates@vt.edu and provide your preferred email, mailing address, and phone number.

Corps alumni themed giveaways

Over the past several years, we have purposely designed our giveaways for Corps Reunion to have an outdoor/camping theme. These items range from flashlights, magnetic compasses, camping mugs, and most recently a lightweight camping/stadium blanket. Don’t miss the opportunity to collect these fantastic giveaways by coming to our events and don’t forget that when you join us, you will also get an event sticker that you can display on your alumni camping mug or favorite water jug.

Giving Day 2024

Mark your calendars and rally to help the Corps on Feb. 19-20. The Corps competes against other units at Virginia Tech to unlock funds from the university as bonuses during this 24-hour period of giving, and we don't think there's any reason for anyone to beat us. Participate, help cadets, and help the Corps win.
